The decision comes down to what you need protection from:
- A canopy protects from rain and sun, but not from wind, dust or theft.
- A cold hangar is enclosed, so it also keeps out wind and dust.
- An insulated hangar additionally allows the temperature to be controlled.
How dimensions are chosen
The size depends on how many machines or how much material must fit, and whether you need to approach them from the side. A common mistake is planning a canopy to fit exactly what you own today, leaving no margin. If the farm or business grows, a few extra metres pay for themselves quickly.
It is also worth considering the canopy orientation relative to prevailing winds and rainfall – this matters more than it seems, especially in open countryside.
